If you are a blood donor (or thinking about becoming one), you should be aware that the NHS Blood Donation Service will not allow you to give blood if you’ve had traditional acupuncture within the last six months. This is because acupuncture is an unregulated profession, and they consider there is a risk of your blood being contaminated by a blood-borne virus as a result of treatment. Our professional body, the British Acupuncture Council, holds us to the highest standards of hygiene and clinical excellence, and has long campaigned to remove this stigma from traditional acupuncture – but to no effect.
In the meantime, we would like to reassure you that I maintain the highest standards of hygiene in the clinic: there is absolutely no possibility of cross-contamination, and there is no reason to be concerned about a blood-borne virus. But nonetheless you won’t be able to give blood for six months after the date of your last treatment with me.
