High blood pressure (hypertension)

At least 25% of the adult population in the UK have hypertension (high blood pressure), which is a blood pressure measurement of 140/90mmHg or more, and this is strongly influenced by age and lifestyle factors. In older patients, raised systolic pressure is the more dominant feature, while raised diastolic pressure is more common in younger patients (under 50 years old). It is very commonplace, accounting for around 12% of consultations in general practice.
