Heart disease

Coronary heart disease (also known as ischaemic heart disease, and also occurring as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction) occurs when cholesterol builds up in the coronary arteries and atherosclerotic plaques form. Over time, this causes narrowing and hardening of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. Over 80,000 people die each year from coronary heart disease in the UK; it is the UK’s most predominant fatal disease, accounting for one in five deaths in men, and one in eight in women.

Heart failure

Heart failure occurs if the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, usually because the heart muscle has become too weak or stiff to work properly. Common causes are hypertension (high blood pressure) and coronary heart disease, arrhythmias, cardiomyopathy and heart valve disease. An estimated 900,000 people in the UK have heart failure; mild cases may have no symptoms, but as the condition progresses, it can cause breathlessness, fatigue and swollen ankles.
